Harris Rosen Foundation Donates $1 Million to Help Build New Villas at Give Kids The World

Press Releases

Hotelier and Philanthropist Donates to Organization’s Capital Expansion Project to Help Accommodate More Children with Life-Threatening Illnesses

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (December 18, 2012) – Orlando hotelier and recognized philanthropist Harris Rosen, president of Rosen Hotels & Resorts, has donated $1 million to Give Kids The World (GKTW) towards the construction of 64 new villas which will accommodate more children with life-threatening illnesses and their families visiting the nonprofit resort for a once-in-a-lifetime dream vacation. The donation, which was made through the Harris Rosen Foundation, will go towards GKTW’s $40 million Capital Expansion and Improvement project, which is part of a larger $120 million, four-year Village Campaign.

“Give Kids The World got an early Christmas present this week when I received a phone call that all non-profits dream of getting,” said GKTW President Pamela Landwirth. “Mr. Rosen’s incredible gift not only jump-starts the fundraising for our new villas, but also provides the inspiration to hope for many more generous gifts in support of our campaign.”

Rosen is a widely recognized and respected hotelier, community builder, father and philanthropist who founded Rosen Hotels & Resorts in 1974 before donating 25 acres of land and $10 million to the University of Central Florida in 2002 to develop the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at UCF. Students from Rosen College volunteer regularly at GKTW, following their founder’s mantra of giving back to the community. Rosen has a long history of giving to those in need, particularly children.

“I realize what an incredibly fortunate individual I am because I have been able to achieve so much more than I ever imagined, and now I have an opportunity to give back, something I have always wanted to do,” said Rosen. “My hope is that others in my position will recognize their duty to engage in what I refer to as ‘responsible capitalism’ and to use their success and wealth to benefit others, simply because it’s the right thing to do.”

Every year, GKTW welcomes more than 7,000 families from around the world for a weeklong, cost-free vacation complete with accommodations in whimsical villas, meals, donated attractions tickets, nightly entertainment and more. However, with only 140 villas on the 70-acre resort, nearly 500 of those families must stay off-site at nearby hotels. Rosen’s gift will allow more children and their families the opportunity to experience the magic of staying at the whimsical Village where ice cream is served for breakfast, Christmas comes once a week and 6-foot-tall bunny rabbits named Mayor Clayton and Ms. Merry tuck the children in at night.

Today, Rosen had the opportunity to meet one of the families who will be helped because of his gift. The Vandiver Family from Pelham, Ala., is staying at Give Kids The World Village this week as part of 4-year-old Abigail’s wish to visit Walt Disney World. Diagnosed with cancer at seven months old, “Abby” has been cancer-free for three and half years. Rosen shared in the family’s fun this morning by indulging in ice cream for breakfast – a tradition a Give Kids The World Village – with Abby and siblings Patrick, 10, and Sarah, 7. Afterwards, he joined the children for a ride on the Village’s Enchanted Carousel.

Watching her children’s faces light up with joy as the carousel spun around, Abby’s mother, Amy, remarked, “I stay at home with the children and my husband is a police officer so being [at Give Kids The World Village] is something we could never have afforded on our own. It is truly the vacation of a lifetime.”

ORLANDO (June 21, 2012) – Guests at the three Rosen Hotels & Resorts convention hotels, the award-winning AAA Four Diamond 1500-room Rosen Shingle Creek, 1334-room Rosen Centre and 800-room Rosen Plaza, will soon be able to celebrate independence from Internet charges as the Orlando-based hotel group offers free internet service — both wireless or hardwired — in guest rooms and public areas beginning July 4.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts has implemented this change as part of its ongoing commitment to providing exceptional value and service to its business and leisure guests. The costs will not be reflected in a resort fee or otherwise hidden said President & COO Harris Rosen. “To us, free means free, and we thought Independence Day was the perfect time to announce this liberating change for our guests. It gives them the freedom to connect on their own terms, in the privacy of their guest rooms, without worrying about financial constraints or additional charges.”

Today’s travelers are even more reliant on their smart phones, iPads/ tablets and laptops for work or play. Leisure travelers are increasingly reliant on the Internet not only for access to e-mail but also for last-minute vacation planning and research on attractions, activities, shopping, and more. Business and convention guests can now work productively and more affordably on their own schedules, from their guest room, meeting room, restaurant, lobby, or even poolside.

Free internet connectivity is also an attractive incentive for meeting planners, for whom price, value and amenities are always deciding factors among Orlando’s many convention choices. The new free internet service is just one of the many Rosen Planner Perks™ and specials available to meeting planners. To book meetings or for more information, meeting planners may visit www.RosenHotels.com/ROI or call 407-996-9939.

Together, the three Rosen convention hotels offer the most rooms, most meeting space and closest proximity to the Orange County Convention Center of any Orlando convention hotels. Combined, they lead the local convention market offering more than 3,634 rooms and a total of 611,000 gross square feet of flexible meeting/event space featuring the nation’s second largest column-free ballroom, an award-winning championship 18-hole golf course and golf academy, world-class spas, nearly two dozen dining, entertainment and lounge options, state-of-the-art fitness centers, a variety of tennis and sport courts which will provide meetings attendees and leisure guests unparalleled convenience and amenities.

Each of the Rosen convention properties has been designated a Two Palm Green Lodge by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, meeting and often surpassing the state’s requirements to be deemed eco-friendly hotels.

Over the past 38 years, Rosen Hotels & Resorts has grown from 256 to approximately 6,300 rooms, approximately six percent of the total guest rooms in Central Florida. Today, the Rosen family of hotels, which includes the award-winning Rosen Shingle Creek, Rosen Centre and Rosen Plaza, and four leisure properties in the Orlando tourist corridor, including the Quality Inn International, Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, Rosen Inn closest to Universal and Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista, remain committed to providing outstanding value for all guests.

Harris Rosen Foundation Presents $100,000 Toward Relief Efforts for Victims of 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Press Releases

Harris Rosen - Japan Doll ORLANDO (March 26, 2012) – On Wednesday, March 21, Harris Rosen, President and COO of Rosen Hotels & Resorts and the Harris Rosen Foundation and Honorary Consul General of Japan in Orlando, presented a $100,000 check to the Tohoku region of Japan and Urayasu, Japan to aid in relief efforts from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The announcement was made during a Japan Earthquake Relief check presentation ceremony held at 10 a.m. at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was there to help present the check and spoke about Orlando’s sister city relationship with Urayasu, Japan, which shares Orlando’s roots in tourism as the home to Tokyo Disney Resort.

Last spring, Rosen pledged to raise funds to assist with much-needed relief efforts. At that time, Lake Highland Preparatory School students asked him to match dollar for dollar any monies they might raise. When they came to the table with an astounding $43,240, he honored that pledge to make a total donation of $86,440. Since then, other donations from Rosen Hotels & Resorts associates and other sources have brought that total to $100,000.

Mayor Dyer introduced exchange students from Urayasu, who conducted a brief presentation, sharing video and photos along with stories about their personal experiences involving the earthquake, the state of their homeland, relief efforts already in place and the resilient spirit of the Japanese people. The students also presented Rosen with a Japanese doll of friendship as a thank you for his efforts on their country’s behalf.

“It was incredibly impactful to hear directly from the students about what they heard, saw and felt during the earthquake,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “I am incredibly honored that our community showed such an outpouring of support for the residents effected by the Japan earthquake and for Orlando’s long-standing relationship with the residents of Urayasu.”

The student presentation was followed by remarks from Rosen, who spoke about the need for relief in Urayasu and in the Tohuku region, which is one of the closest areas to the earthquake epicenter.

“As a young man in the military, I was stationed in Japan and developed an affection and appreciation for the Japanese people and their culture. Because of my time spent there and the relationships I formed, I was honored to take on the role of Honorary Consul General for Orlando and am honored to be able to assist in fundraising and relief efforts. In this role, I hope to help in being a good steward of the money raised by the students at Lake Highland Preparatory School and by Rosen Hotels & Resorts associates and all who have so generously contributed.”

Rosen, Mayor Dyer and Jeff Turner, Special Assistant to the President for Leadership Development, Lake Highland Preparatory School, then presented a $100,000 check, which was accepted on behalf of the Japanese sister city by Takako Johnson, a member of the Mayor’s International Advisory Committee. The presentation was followed by refreshments in the lobby.

This is the second time that Rosen has matched funds raised by LHPS. Two years ago, the student body raised more than $116,000 for earthquake victims in Haiti, another cause near and dear to Rosen’s heart as more than one third of Rosen Hotels & Resorts associates are Haitian or of Haitian descent. Through his foundation, he also matched those funds, in addition to conducting numerous other fundraising, food and supply drives as part of his larger Relief-Rebuild-Sustain program for Haiti. Overall, the Harris Rosen Foundation has raised close to one million dollars for Haiti earthquake relief and continues to work on developing the low-cost, eco-friendly Little Haiti House Village.

Due to its competitive wages and outstanding associate benefit program, including the new Rosen Medical Center, A Place for Healing and Wellness, continuing education and language development programs, Rosen Hotels & Resorts has one of the lowest associate turnover rates in the hotel industry. Funding from the Harris Rosen Foundation has allowed for the creation of the Tangelo Park Project, which provides free preschool, college and vocational education to disadvantaged youth; the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management; and the Jack and Lee Rosen Southwest Orlando Jewish Community Center. The Foundation also contributes to numerous charitable organizations throughout Central Florida and beyond each year.

The Rosen Hotels & Resorts family includes three award-winning convention properties, Rosen Plaza, Rosen Centre and Rosen Shingle Creek, and four leisure properties in the Orlando tourist corridor, including the Quality Inn International, Rosen Inn closest to Universal, Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando and Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista.
